Street FC 2-2 Wellington
Stay ConnectedHow to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory? Simple; go into the fifth minute of added on time 2-1 up, get a penalty, see your strike saved by the keeper who then also saves your follow-up. One minute later fail to deal with a long throw into your own penalty area and watch as the ball runs free to a Wellington player who gleefully smashes it into the net to earn his side a deserved point, writes Anthony Randle
Such was the tale of the last couple of minutes of this game, one which had started so promisingly for The Cobblers in the tenth minute when Callum Laird – sadly to feature prominently in that closing drama as the penalty-taker – was first to a rebound off the post to tap home his ninth goal of the season.
Things got even better four minutes later when Toby Stephens was allowed to stroll unchecked into the visitors’ area and make it 2-0 with a fine finish. With Harry Foster coming agonisingly close to making it three with a splendid curled effort that clipped the angle of post and crossbar the home fans could be forgiven for thinking victory a formality but as halftime approached there were signs of Wellington getting back into the game.
Those became concrete when they pulled one back ten minutes into the second period, thereafter dominating the game.
As the minutes ticked down it seemed as if Street would hang on for a valuable three points but alas it wasn’t to be and at the end, despite those unfortunate circumstances, no-one could really begrudge Wellington the result.
